Curly Hair in Coastal Humidity

Cabello rizado en humedad costera

Coastal San Diego humidity is lower than the East Coast or the Gulf, but it's not low. May Gray and June Gloom bring marine layer that can flip your hair from defined to puffy in one walk to the car. Here's how to plan for it.

What Humidity Actually Does

Qué hace la humedad

High humidity pulls moisture into the hair shaft. For porous hair (the kind most curly hair is), this happens fast. The result is swelling, frizz, and loss of pattern definition.

Lower humidity does the opposite. Hair gets brittle, defined but dry, sometimes static. Both extremes need different routines.

May Gray, June Gloom, and Marine Layer

Mayo gris, junio gloomy, capa marina

These are San Diego's three nicknames for the same phenomenon: a coastal cloud layer that brings cooler temperatures and higher humidity, mostly in late spring and early summer.

Inland Chula Vista (including Eastlake and Otay Ranch) gets less of this than coastal Pacific Beach or La Jolla. But it still affects hair on days when the marine layer pushes east.

Humidity FAQs

Preguntas de humedad

Will my curls always frizz in marine layer?

Not always. Anti-humidity finishing spray and a tighter cast help. So does proper drying before stepping outside.

Is humidity worse for color-treated hair?

Yes. Color-treated hair is more porous and absorbs moisture faster.

What about Santa Ana winds (low humidity)?

Opposite problem. Add a lightweight oil to the ends and use a leave-in conditioner with more moisture.

Should I cut my hair shorter for humidity season?

Not necessary. The right cut handles humidity better than a shorter cut for the season.

Spanish service?

Yes.
