The Curl Type Guide, 2A Through 4C

Guía de tipos de rizos 2A a 4C

Most clients don't know their curl type. That's fine. Yazmin reads it during the consult. But knowing it gives you better language for your routine and better filters when you're choosing products. Here's the whole spectrum, explained without jargon.

Type 2: Wavy

Ondulado

Wavy hair frizzes when treated as straight hair. Most stylists don't see the wave pattern at first because they wet the hair before cutting. Dry consultations solve this.

Type 3: Curly

Rizado

Type 3 is the most familiar curl type and the one most products are marketed toward. It also has the most internal variety. Most Type 3 heads have multiple sub-patterns across the scalp.

Type 4: Coily

Enrulado

Type 4 is the most underserved in mainstream salons. The right cut technique requires dry shaping in the natural pattern with no stretching. Most type 4 clients arrive at Yazmin's chair after years of bad cuts elsewhere.

Curl Type FAQs

Curl type questions

What if I have more than one curl type?

Most people do. The crown might be 3B while the nape is 3C. The right cut treats each section in its own pattern.

How do I figure out my type?

Look at a curl from root to tip without product or styling. Compare to the descriptions. Or book a consult and Yazmin maps it for you.

Does heat damage change my type?

It loosens the pattern temporarily and can be permanent if heat is frequent. The original pattern often returns with rest and the right cut.

Why does my type matter for product?

Hair density and porosity vary by type. Type 2 needs lighter product. Type 4 usually needs more moisture and slower-absorbing oils.

Spanish?

Yes. See the Spanish version of this guide.
